Abstract

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has emerged as a transformative technology in higher education, influencing teaching, learning, assessment, research, and academic administration. Tools capable of generating text, images, presentations, computer code, and other forms of content provide new opportunities for personalized learning, instant academic support, content development, research assistance, and improved productivity. At the same time, the growing use of Generative AI raises concerns relating to academic integrity, plagiarism, misinformation, overdependence on technology, data privacy, algorithmic bias, intellectual property, and the changing role of teachers. This article examines the opportunities, challenges, and ethical considerations associated with the use of Generative AI in higher education. The paper emphasizes the need for institutional AI policies, AI literacy programmes, responsible assessment practices, faculty development, data protection, and human oversight. It concludes that Generative AI should complement rather than replace human intelligence, creativity, academic judgement, and teacher–student interaction.
