Abstract

Climate change has emerged as a major challenge to global agriculture, affecting crop productivity, water availability, farming practices, rural livelihoods, and food security. Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, increasing water stress, and extreme climatic events are creating additional pressures on agricultural systems, although the magnitude of these impacts varies across crops, geographical regions, and farming conditions. This study examines the multidimensional relationship between climate change and agriculture, with particular emphasis on three interconnected areas: crop productivity, agricultural adaptation practices, and food security.
The study adopts a structured literature review approach and synthesizes evidence from 50 selected scholarly publications identified through Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect, supplemented by authoritative reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The selected literature was screened for relevance and organized through qualitative thematic synthesis covering temperature and crop productivity, rainfall variability and water stress, extreme climatic events, climate-smart and adaptive agricultural practices, food security, socioeconomic vulnerability, and policy responses.
The synthesis indicates that climate change poses substantial but uneven risks to agricultural productivity. Increasing temperatures, irregular precipitation, drought, water scarcity, and climatic extremes can negatively affect crop development and yields, while the severity of these effects depends on crop type, geographical conditions, irrigation availability, farming practices, and adaptive capacity. The review further demonstrates that adaptation measures—including crop diversification, climate-resilient varieties, agroforestry, improved soil and water management, efficient irrigation, and other climate-smart agricultural practices—can strengthen agricultural resilience. However, their adoption is often constrained by limited finance, technology, infrastructure, climate information, extension services, and institutional support, particularly among smallholder and resource-constrained farmers.
The findings also demonstrate that climate-related agricultural impacts extend beyond crop production to the broader food system by influencing food availability, accessibility, affordability, and stability. The study concludes that strengthening agricultural resilience requires an integrated approach combining scientific innovation, sustainable water and soil management, locally appropriate adaptation practices, financial and institutional support, resilient food systems, farmer participation, and coordinated climate policy. Such measures are essential for reducing agricultural vulnerability and supporting long-term food security under increasingly uncertain climatic conditions.
