Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) and automation are rapidly changing human resource management (HRM) from a predominantly administrative function into a more data-driven, predictive and strategic activity. AI can support recruitment, candidate screening, employee communication, learning and development, workforce planning, performance management, employee experience and routine HR administration. Automation can reduce repetitive work, improve processing speed and enable HR professionals to concentrate on higher-value activities. At the same time, AI in HR creates significant challenges involving algorithmic bias, privacy, transparency, explainability, cybersecurity, employee surveillance and the preservation of human judgment. This article examines the role of AI and automation in HRM, major applications across the employee lifecycle, benefits and limitations, and the changing role of HR professionals. Particular attention is given to recent trends including generative AI, agentic AI, AI-enabled recruitment, skills-based talent management, personalized employee journeys, AI-assisted learning, workforce analytics and human-AI collaboration. Recent SHRM research indicates that AI adoption in HR is expanding, with recruiting, HR technology, learning and development, and employee experience among the most common areas of use. The article argues that the future of HRM is unlikely to be purely automated; rather, competitive advantage will increasingly come from combining AI capabilities with human judgment, empathy, ethics and organizational context.
